stethoscope
  1. Each student must have a current card for the level of training they wish to pursue, such as a BLS and/or Heartsaver card.
  2. The level of instruction desired by the student determines the essential course they will take.

BLS Instructor Essentials Online or Heartsaver Essentials Online is required to complete prior to attending the Instructor course.

The Instructor manual and the PAM (Program Administrator Manual) on Atlas, https://atlas.heart.org/, is necessary to complete the essentials for BLS and or Heartsaver.

BLS and Heartsaver Instructor Essentials Online is the self-directed, online portion of the BLS and Heartsaver Instructor Essentials blended learning course. Course content covers steps for becoming an AHA Instructor and steps of the instruction cycle: Prepare, Teach, Test & Remediate, Close, and Keep Current. This course includes core information about instructing AHA BLS Provider courses, followed by course-specific information.

The BLS and Heartsaver Instructor Essentials Course is designed to prepare instructor candidates to teach AHA Instructor-led and blended learning BLS Provider or Heartsaver courses. It educates instructor candidates on how to use AHA Instructor teaching materials, ensure that students meet learning objectives, offer student coaching skills, provide an objective skills performance evaluation, and follow AHA Instructor and course policies. The course covers core content and discipline-specific content required to teach AHA courses.

3. Instructor manual is required for each person.
This is mandatory to complete the essential online course and will need to be brought to the Instructor course.

A. The BLS Instructor Manual eBook is the electronic equivalent of the AHA’s BLS Instructor Manual. It offers an alternative to the printed manual and includes essential information and Lesson Plans that AHA BLS Instructors need to teach the BLS Course.

This product has been updated with new science from the 2025 Guidelines for CPR and ECC and replaces the previous version (20-3103).

B. Please review the information before attending the Instructor course. This information will be covered on the exam in class.
